Feel great about getting out and exercising while enjoying some United States history! The George Washington Parkway Classic is the hometown race of Alexandria, VA. The race starts at the foot of George Washington’s home, the Mount Vernon Estate, and winds down through Old Town. If you’re not feeling up to a marathon, that’s all right – the Parkway Classic is fun for all ages and features a 5K, 10-mile race, and Sugar Shack Kids Dash. At the end of the run, reward yourself with delicious food and drink at District Taco and Port City Brewing located near the finish line. Whether you choose to wear a bonnet or powdered wig during the run is totally up to you!
The 5K starting line is at Belle Haven Marina and the finish line is at Oronoco Bay Park. The 10-mile race begins at Mt. Vernon Estates and ends at Oronoco Bay Park. Racers will need to use transportation, which includes free shuttles. The Sugar Shack Kids Dash is an 800-meter dash. Online pre-registration is required for all races.
Participants in the 5k and 10-mile receive a tech shirt, promotional materials, and a finisher medal. Kids Dash participants receive a finisher medal and Sugar Shack donut.
There are several venues where runners may pick up their packets on the weekends leading up to race day. During the race weekend, packets may only be picked up at Pacers Alexandria located at 130 King Street. There is no packet pickup available on race day, so be sure to grab yours early. You may pick up a race bag for other people without an ID. The running materials come in a plastic bag that runners will need to keep if they plan on checking any of their items at the bag check area for the race.

Before or after the race, runners will want to stroll through Old Town and Mt. Vernon Estates at leisure. There is much history here, and Washington, D.C., is mere minutes away. You can visit some of the 200-plus beautiful restaurants or take a biking tour of the Mount Vernon Trail. You can even find special hotel packages when planning your Parkway Classic getaway. Don’t forget to stroll down King Street, listed among the “Great Streets” in the U.S.
Strollers are permitted for the Parkway Classic but cannot be taken onto the provided transportation. Racers should plan to have the strollers dropped off at the start. Unfortunately, dogs and other pets are not allowed to run in the Parkway Classic.
If you have any supporters coming to cheer you on during the race, some hotels, such as Hotel Indigo, may provide poster materials for them to make a special message just for you. Runners and supporters should inquire at their hotel front desk to see if such materials are available.
