June Featured Race : Monterey Spartan Super

What

The Monterey Super is held each year in Toro Park. This year’s race is scheduled for June 9. It takes runners through a varied terrain that includes hills, wooded area, fields and prairies. It is considered a challenging race of trails with many twists and turns. Runners will get to take in the landscape of Northern California as they take on this Spartan Race.

Not just a running race, the Monterey Super also features obstacles to test the athletic abilities of participants. There are between 24 and 29 obstacles along the race course. Obstacles include mud, water, barbed wires, fire and hills. The race was so tough that it was often called a beast in its early days and still lives up to that recognition today with its demanding layout. It is recommended for only those conditioned athletes that can handle the rough terrain and demanding obstacles. However, previous experience running this or any Spartan race is not required and first-timers are certainly welcomed.

Start times are staggered depending on what group a runner is in. The first race starts at 7:30 a.m. when the Elite men leave the start line. They are followed by Elite Women at 7:45 a.m. Age group start times begin at 8:00 a.m.. Afternoon start times start at 12:15 p.m. Runners are released in waves of around 250 participants at 15 minute intervals. It is suggested that runners get to the race course early to prepare for their start time and to avoid missing their wave.

Those finishing the race get a medal, medal wedge piece to be used to complete the trifecta medal upon completion of two other Spartan races, free beer and an event t-shirt. Professional photos are offered for free, along with bananas and protein bars at the finish line. There are no pets allowed during the race and runners are encouraged to register early as the race quickly fills up.
