There aren’t many races that let you start at the home of America’s Founding Fathers. Fewer still have you experience the beauty and history of Mount Vernon, home to one George Washington. Maybe you’ve heard of him? Kind of a big deal.
If you’re a history buff, love some natural beauty, and are looking to get some good, less-intense runs in, then the George Washington Parkway Classic is for you. The race was founded in 1984 by Congressman Jim Moran and Race Director, Nancy LaValle. In its 33rd year, this annual 5K and ten-mile run takes you from Mount Vernon down the stunning, tree lined George Washington Parkway, and into the center of historic Old Town Alexandria. If the scenery is not enough to convince you this a great race, how about that each year this race raises money for local nonprofits, having raised well over a million dollars in its history. This year, a portion of all proceeds raised went go to the Boys and Girls Club of Alexandria.
Once the race is finished, runners are treated to the Finish Festival. The Festival has numerous attractions including beer from Port City Brewing Company, a moon bounce for the kids, and even a photo booth with the one and only, George Washington. Just remember, Revolutionary attire is on you to provide. No muskets, please.
